You're reading this on a device. That device is connected to other devices — millions of them, all over the world. But how? What's actually happening when you open an app, send a message, or load a page?
The answer is the internet. And it's not magic — it's infrastructure, like roads or pipes. Once you see it that way, it makes complete sense.
Start with the simplest idea: a network
A network is just a group of things connected together so they can share information. Two tin cans with a string between them — that's a network. Two phones on the same Wi-Fi — that's a network too.
The internet is a network of networks. It's millions of smaller networks — homes, offices, schools, data centres* — all connected together into one enormous web.
How does information actually travel?
When you send a message or load a page, your information doesn't travel in one piece. It gets broken into small chunks called packets*. Each packet finds its own way through the network — like individual cars on different roads all heading to the same destination — and they reassemble at the other end.
Real life example
Imagine you're sending a 10-page letter to a friend. Instead of mailing it as one envelope, you tear each page separately, write the page number and destination on each one, and drop them all in different postboxes. Some might take different routes, arrive in different orders — but your friend collects them all and puts them back in order. That's packets.
The physical side — what does the internet run on?
The internet isn't wireless for most of its journey. At its core, it runs on undersea cables — enormous fibre optic* cables laid across the ocean floor connecting continents. When you message someone in the USA from Kerala, your data probably travels through a cable under the Arabian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
The last stretch — from a nearby tower or box to your home — is where Wi-Fi and mobile data* come in. That part is wireless. But the backbone of the internet is very much physical.
Who owns the internet?
Nobody — and everybody. This surprises most people. The internet isn't owned by any one company or government. It's a shared infrastructure, built and maintained by thousands of organisations: telecom companies, governments, universities, private businesses.
What is owned are parts of it — the cables, the towers, the data centres. Jio owns certain infrastructure in India. BSNL owns some. Google owns undersea cables. But no one entity controls the whole thing.
What's the difference between the internet and the web?
People use these words interchangeably but they're different things.
The internet is the infrastructure — the cables, routers, and connections between devices. It's like the road network.
The World Wide Web (what you use when you open a browser) is one service that runs on top of the internet — like cars on the road. Email is another service. WhatsApp is another. Video calls are another. All of them use the internet's infrastructure, but they're not the internet itself.
