We've established that the internet is a global network connecting billions of devices. But knowing what it is is different from knowing what it can do. And what it can do turns out to be extraordinary.
This article is a tour of the network's capabilities — not as a technical list, but as a way of seeing just how much of modern life depends on it.
The basics: communicate and share
The most obvious thing the network does is let people communicate. Email, WhatsApp, calls, video meetings — all of it is just information moving across the network from one device to another.
But "communicate" undersells it. The network allows a student in a village outside Thrissur to attend a live class taught by someone in Singapore. It allows a doctor in Thiruvananthapuram to read an X-ray taken in a clinic in Wayanad within seconds. It allows a small business in Kozhikode to sell to customers in Dubai without a middleman.
Six things the network can do that still surprise people
Deliver entertainment instantly
When you stream a film on Netflix or a video on YouTube, you're receiving millions of tiny data packets per second, assembled in real time into something you watch without thinking about it. The infrastructure behind this is enormous.
Enable remote healthcare*
Telemedicine — consulting a doctor online — is just the beginning. Surgeons have already performed operations remotely using robotic arms controlled over the network. Patient data, scans, and prescriptions move instantly between hospitals.
Move money in milliseconds
UPI, bank transfers, stock trades — all of it is data moving across the network. When you pay with GPay, the transaction crosses multiple systems, gets verified, and completes in under two seconds. That's the network doing financial work.
Run artificial intelligence*
When you use a voice assistant, get a recommendation on Spotify, or ask something to an AI chatbot, you're talking to a programme running on servers far away. The network delivers your question and brings back the answer in real time.
Control physical machines
Factories use networked sensors to monitor machines and predict failures before they happen. Farms use networked soil sensors to decide when to water crops. Traffic lights in smart cities adjust in real time based on network data.
Democratise knowledge
Every scientific paper, tutorial, course, and piece of recorded human knowledge is — at least in theory — accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This has never been true before in human history.
The Internet of Things — when objects join the network
It's not just phones and computers on the network anymore. The Internet of Things (IoT)* is the name for the growing number of everyday objects that connect to the internet — fridges, streetlights, cars, medical implants, factory sensors.
Closer to home than you think
Kerala's smart meter rollout connects electricity meters to the network so the electricity board can read usage remotely, detect faults instantly, and manage the grid better. Those meters are IoT devices. Someone had to design them, install them, and write the software that runs them.
The darker side — what the network also enables
It wouldn't be honest to only show the good parts. The same network that enables telemedicine also enables scams. The same infrastructure that spreads knowledge also spreads misinformation. The same systems that connect people also enable surveillance*.
Understanding these risks is part of being network-literate. It's not a reason to be afraid — it's a reason to be informed.
