We've covered what the internet is and what it can do. Now let's make it personal. The services we're going to look at in this article are ones your family almost certainly uses every single day — you just might not have thought about what's happening behind them, or who builds them.

That last part is the point of this whole series: every service has people behind it. People with careers.

What's a "service" on the internet?

A service is a programme or system that runs on the internet and does something useful for you. You access it through an app or a browser. The programme itself lives on servers* — powerful computers in data centres — and the network delivers it to your device.

* Servers and cloud computing — most internet services don't run on your device, they run on remote computers called servers. The term "cloud" just means "someone else's servers." We'll cover cloud computing and its career implications in a dedicated article.

WhatsApp, email, video calls. The most used category of internet service on earth. Billions of messages cross the network every minute.

DigiLocker, Aadhaar, income tax filing, passport applications, ration card management. India has moved a huge amount of government work online in the last decade — and it's still growing.

The pattern you should notice

Look at every service above. Each one has a "careers behind it" line. And the careers are wildly different — engineers, designers, analysts, managers, content creators, policy specialists.

You don't have to be a programmer to work in technology. Every internet service needs people who understand the business, the users, the content, the legal side, and the human side — not just the code.

The big takeaway: The internet isn't just for using — it's a platform that employs millions of people across every skill type. Every service you touched today was built by a team. Understanding what those services are is the first step to understanding which part of building them might suit you.
